Archaeological excavations in Germany are subject to the accident prevention regulations for construction works. Excavations of wells come under the regulations for drilling works. The detailed regulations can be obtained from the construction workers' co-operative or from the Gemeindeunfallversicherungsverband (association for communal accident insurance). Compliance with the regulations is controlled by the Technical Supervisory Board and labour safety authorities (Trade Inspectorate).
The location of supply lines through the excavation area must be established before the start of the excavation. One should also take into account the possibility of ammunition lying in the ground. During the excavation, one must see to it that the soil profiles are prevented from collapsing and workers are protected from falling material.
