block excavation, block lifting

Very fragile finds or complicated find contexts, which cannot be dealt with appropriately on site, are recovered in one block including the surrounding soil. The block is then exposed and documented step by step in the restoration laboratory. Small blocks can be wrapped in plaster bandages. Sturdy box constructions are necessary to recover large objects.

In any case it is important to label the block and record its exact provenance (north arrow, marking the top).
