Artificially achieved horizontal area of an excavation, not necessarily following the contour of the layer in the ground.
Usually the area is "cleaned" with a trowel after the spit or layer has been removed with shovels or by the mechanical digger. This reveals the slightest differences in colour and matrix so that the features can be recognized.
The method stands in contrast to the method of excavation following the natural layers.
